Two New Guardians of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Musem

I happened to pass by the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Musuem today and being quite attached to it, I immediately identified the addition of two stone statue of guardians styled in Japanese style at the main door. I instantly whipped out my compact camera and snapped away.

Revoltech No.027: EVA-02 (1997 Movie Version)

With eight Evangelion Revoltechs in my backlog , I had to take one of them and give it a photo shoot. I picked the newer Revoltech No.027 EVA-02 (1997 Movie Version). The box of this EVA-02 is slimmer than the rest of the Revoltechs, but the contents are not trimmed at all! Packed with a core body, seven hands, a twin-blade, a 'pen-knife' dagger, dagger-release shoulder, missile pod shoulder and power cable. This newer 'breed' of Revoltechs stands at a 140mm height compared to the earlier Revoltechs. An immediate difference I spotted is the better articulation design compared to my earlier EVA-01. The EVA-02 is really cool and it takes this gallery to tell you why!

Evangelion Unit 02
, built by NERV Germany, is the first Production Model Eva. It is piloted by Asuka Langley Soryu and is the first Evangelion built specifically for combat. Combining the efficient construction of Unit 01 with an arsenal of concealed weaponry, Unit 02 is a walking tank designed to counter the threat posed by the Angels, although it fails to reach the power level of Unit 01, which remains the most powerful Evangelion ever built. It can be considered the most stable Evangelion as it only goes truly "berserk" once, just before its destruction. It has achieved an unusually high sync ratio with its pilot(s), on two other occasions: once in combat against the 6th angel Gaghiel, and once under the influence of the 17th Angel. The unit is colored red and has two pairs of eyes (4 total). The head armor has two movable sections, one covering both the jaw and lower eyes and the other above the upper pair of eyes. These plates can actually shift, displaying glowing white eyes. This happens underwater during the fight with Gaghiel when Asuka needed to pry open the giant Angel's mouth. Some argue that in this state, Unit 02 has achieved "berserker" status, but fans remain divided on the subject. This also occurs when the 17th angel, Tabris, takes command of unit 02 in episode 24. As a result of being constructed by NERV Germany, and also as an accommodation for its three-quarters-German pilot, its default language setting is German. It is known to contain the part of the soul of Asuka's mother that is defined as "mother". Unit 02 features a different progressive knife from earlier Eva units as well as an internal weapon rack in the right shoulder binder which fires needle packs. Unit 02 has blue blood, which is first seen when the fourteenth Angel, Zeruel, cuts off its arms.

Unit 02 is finally destroyed in The End of Evangelion by Units 05 through 13. Asuka was still highly synchronized with Unit 02 as it was destroyed, thus practically suffering every wound (the frames after the Lance of Longinus is plunged just above the Eva's left eye show her bleeding rapidly from above her eye, as well as getting her arm sliced in half by another Lance). Later, when Shinji emerges from the GeoFront in Unit 01, he is horrified to see one of the mass produced Evas carrying Unit 02's mangled upper torso in its hands.

彌勒大佛 Maitreya Buddha & 百龙殿 Hall of a Hundred Dragons

NOTE: Before you read this article, please turn on your speakers and click here. This link will open a new page, which plays a beautiful music called "Compassionate Love" to guide you through this post.

I have earlier posted an article on Cintâmanicakra Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (如意輪觀音 in Chinese) and my visit to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum (BTRTM). I have earlier visited this temple during Vesak 2551 Float Parade and other brief occasions. I have always wanted to return to the temple to capture the beauty of the main Hall of a Hundred Dragons (百龙殿 in Chinese) dedicated to Maitreya Buddha (彌勒大佛 in Chinese). I have decided that I will have to divide this post into two and probably more parts, due to the reason that I have not taken enough pictures of the Maitreya Buddha (or probably lack of inspiration). However, I have spent more attention on the Hundred Buddhas. Since the last visit, it has taken me quite a while to re-visit for a photo shoot, since I do not have a the right lens, hence I would require to bring along my Manfrotto tripod or reluctantly fire my SB-600 flash. I even thought of getting a VR lens to perform the low light shooting, but till date, have not yet done so. So why have I not brought my tripod or flash along for this shoot?

I have visited Chinatown, which has already became part of my weekends and sometimes weekly itinerary. I love the Chinatown as much as I love shopping for my toys in the precinct. On this day, I have not had any intention to visit the temple for a photo-shoot, but to chill-out on a fine Sunday morning. I had my iBook along with me. I also brought along my Nikon D200 equipped with Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and my Canon IXUS 40. It is a rare occasion that I brought all these equipments out together. After I was done with my coffee and blogging, I thought I would like to walk around and take some photos. Subconsciously, my feet found its way to the BTRTM. I thought I just had to enter and finish the unfinished task. Not that I would declare an end and not re-visiting the temple after I have accomplished my task, but I just felt that I have had the intention to start a series of photos collection (in my own perspective) of the BTRTM, I ought to complete it, instead of leaving it as a yet-to-be-done task. My perspective of this photo shoot was no longer targeted at the upcoming photo competition, but I felt that at the BTRTM, they are very welcoming towards photography. I do not wish to take that as a mere photography opportunity or a chance to win in a competition (such that one loses knowledge that this is still a religious place of worship), but I would like to capture the beauty of the magnificent architecture, decorations, artefacts, statues, and most importantly, the smiles of the Buddhas that express endless compassion and hopefully to record a tinge of spirituality into my pictures. I guess I have said enough, and now is the time to share the photographs (see disclaimer). As per my usual practise, I hope my post will not only be visually satisfying, but informative as well.

A Walk In The Hall of a Hundred Dragons

In the Hall of a Hundred Dragons, resides 100 Buddhas on both sides in the form of beautifully hand-crafted statues and 1,400 Buddha Gaus (A Gau is a portable shrine in which a Buddha is kept; often carried around by Vajrayana practitioners for protection and spiritual practise). Above the 100 Buddhas, 100 dragons encircles the 'skies' in the form reliefs found on the cornice of the Mezzanine floor. In this hall, is where the Maitreya Buddha sits on his throne of treasures, surrounded by an intricately-crafted Maitreya Canopy styled in traditional Tang Dynasty design, an exquisite Maitreya Five Dragons Embroidery (suggesting royalty in Chinese history) as backdrop, a pair of precious Dhvaja Banners with embroidered sutras found on both left and right-hand side of the the canopy, and a pair of Maitreya Mandala Lamps which symbolizes the Buddhist cosmic world.

Maitreya, The Buddha of the Future

Maitreya or Metteyya (मैत्रेय in Sanskrit or 彌勒 in Chinese) is usually referred as a Buddha (大佛) according to the Tantras, but sometimes as a Bodhisattva (菩薩) according to the Sutras. Bodhisattva literally translates to "Enlightened Being" who is dedicated to attaining Nirvana and have yet but near to becoming a Buddha. The name of Maitreya suggest 'universal loving kindness'. Maitreya is one who is of infinite compassion and knowledge. The image of Maitreya has been portrayed in many forms, especially in the familiar 'pot-bellied' Budai (布袋) Arhat or Laughing Buddha. Maitreya is believed to be presently residing in the Tushita Heaven, a not too distant place which is reachable through meditation, where Bodhisattvas resides until they descend and become enlightened to become Buddha. Maitreya, believed to be the successor of the Śākyamuni Buddha (I have visited the Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple), will eventually descend to Earth in a most chaotic time when all Sakyamuni Buddha's teachings have disappeared from this world. Maitreya will then teach the purest Dharma to all beings, uniting all. It is also believed that those who follows the Dharma faithfully, will eventually be reborned together with Maitreya, where they will be blessed to be taught by Maitreya with the purest Dharma.

The Hundred Buddhas

In the "Sutra of the names of the One Hundred Buddhas" (佛說百佛名經 in Chinese), the names of the 100 Buddhas are mentioned. Each and every one of the 100 Buddha statues bears different mudras (gestures) and different accessories of Buddhism significance. I have spent most of my time admiring these Buddha statues. Sadly, I was only above to cover the bottom tier of Hundred Buddhas, since the upper tier seems impossible to reach without a tripod and a telephoto zoom lens. I hope to bring you more in the near future!

Temple Bell

The Temple Bell which can be found on the second floor of the Bell Tower. The ground floor of the Bell Tower is where a carved wooden Kristisgarba Bodhisattva resides. I have not spotted this bodhisattva statue yet. In the Hall of a Hundred Dragons, a temple bell is displayed. On the bell which bears the name of the BTRTM, a fierce looking creature which looked like a Kirin (麒麟), is seated on the top.

Cintâmanicakra Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Hall
After the last visit to the Avalokiteśvara (觀音) Hall, the Gilt Bronze Cintâmanicakra Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva were put up on the panels where the 8 Zodiac Protectors resides. More of the Zodiac Protectors to be updated on next visit. I took a picture of the Lotus Ceiling Boards in this hall with low ceiling.

COBRA GEK (1/6th MSFS by MEDICOM Toys)

After posting pictures of the S.W.A.T. (1/6th Dragon), there has been much speculations over my venture into the world of 1/6th. Indeed I had! Thanks to Nexus, aka 1/6th pro bro, I made my first move into 1/6th.

I hereby present to you the preliminary shoot (yes! there will be more!) of the character whom I call, "Watermelon Head", COBRA GEK (Gendarmerie Einsatz Kommando, Gendarmerieeinsatzkommand) from the MSFS (Medicom Special Forces Series) by MEDICOM Toys.

COBRA

MEDICOM Toys: COBRA GEK

EKO (Einsatz Kommando) COBRA, formerly known as GEK (Gendarmerie Einsatz Kommando) is the Counter-Terrorist Special Forces of Austria, formed officially in 1978 to protect the Jewish who took an en route through Austria to Israel, against opposing militant groups. The COBRA is best known for is 'rope-skills' where they are internationally respected for, there is nothing the COBRA cannot climb. Apart from Counter-Terrorism, the COBRA also participate in the local S.W.A.T. activities. Interesting, the codename 'COBRA' was influenced by the movie 'Mission Impossible' (starring Tom Cruise) and became official in 2002 alongside the renaming of GEK to EKO COBRA.

  20. Body Armor,

  22. Trunks.

Supplementary booklet with comic strip on COBRA (in Japanese), promo leaflet and post card.

Glock 17 with magazine with rounds. The round is painted with realistic metallic colours.

Steyr Aug rifle with clear magazine and laser sight. Sadly, the laser sight was not a perfect fit as sight appears pointing slightly downwards instead of forwards. MP5SD with magazine rack and long zoom scope. The butt is retractable, but sticks out from the sides when in compact mode. I worry the elastic rifle sling that will slack over time.

Shield with light mounted. No light emits from the shield of course! But the original one piece equipment became two, the handle came off! Apparantly, it was glued on, and I just have to get a tube of super glue handy.

The bluish Protective vest is in fact violet to the eyes. The camera is never good at capturing true violet. The vest is a three piece suit comprised of a groin guard padding attached to the front, the front and back (both with Gendarmerie printed on a decolorised label) The suit has plenty of black patches intended for pouches to be attached via Velcro.
The nickname which I gave the COBRA 1/6th figure, Watermelon Head, came about from the TITAN helmet reproduced in the most amazing colour tone, it should have been deeper green camouflage.

The Poses
To get me hooked on a toy and to be adored as a photograhy subject, it must first articulate and pose for me!

Equipped with Steyr Aug Rifle

Equipped with Glock 17 and Shield

Equipped with MP5SD

Analysis of the Nude 1/6th MEDICOM Cro-Magnons Body
12-inch pro bro has warned me of the possible cracked hip joint. I decided to analyze the nude body to get a better understanding of the articulation and so that to pose the figure better!

The feet can be flipped from 90 degrees to 'ballet'. The height of the figure can also be adjusted via the removal of the ring between the lower limb and feet. The knee is rather realistic as it does not rotate, unlike the other joints, this is not detacheable. The back of the thigh is hollow, which I believe to reduce the weight of the body. The butt does look weird.

The groin is made such that the thighs can rotate horizontally about the groin, while the left and right side of the groin can vertically. The shoulder joint is more complicated to give a more swing angle. Like the knee joint, the elbow is not detacheable. However, the upper arm is detacheable from the shoulder to make wearing of clothes easier. The hands or gloves are mounted on a ball-joint stem which is then inserted into the forearm.

The nude figure without the hindrance of the clothes, can sure take on uber realistic poses such as the one above, which Shaun Wong would love. He might even find it familiar to his beach wrestling shots. All 1/6th scale nude figures will bear the brand somewhere on the body. For this MEDICOM, it is found behind the lower limb.

The Assembly of COBRA
What assembly does it have? I meant putting on its COBRA outfit. I am recalling how I mishandled my childhood playmates' Barbie dolls. Yes! I was 'lucky' to be playing with girls before I even learnt of carnal pleasures.

Due to the tight cuff of the pants, I need to put on the socks and boxers.

The one piece overall suit comes with a few pockets, rubber pistol holster attached to a rubber belt. I slipped on the clothes with feet first, then attached the arms through the sleeves. A zipper runs from groin up to the neck. With the black overall and balaclava, he now looks like a terrorist! The microphone and earpiece goes under the balaclava and the extension is can later be attached to the walkie-talkie.

The figure looks cool eve without the watermelon.... I meant TITAN helmet!

S.W.A.T. (1/6th Dragon) Action Figure

While I went to collect my toys at CSC, I helped my buddy, Nexus collect his S.W.A.T. 1/6th Dragon action figure from a seller for S$28. Despite a broken feet and boots stuffed with silicon (or glue), by tucking in the slacks into the dusty boots, the boots does not fall off and can still stand and pose. He sure begged for some photos and with Nexus' permission, I granted his wish!

SOTA Street Fighter Round 3: BALROG (US) / M.BISON (JAP)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Balrog (US) / M.Bison (Japan)
Balrog was once a great boxing champion and prize fighter. He was banned from boxing for permanently injuring his opponents (as well as his illegal maneuvers, particularly his headbutt), so he joined the Shadoloo criminal organization, and worked his way up from the bottom, eventually becoming Bison's enforcer. While running errands for M. Bison (Vega in Japan), he killed Dhalsim's elephant with a single Gigaton Punch. In one mission, Balrog was sent to terminate Birdie. Although he did not know why, Balrog went anyway. Birdie told him about the Psycho Drive, and Balrog agreed to help him find it, thinking he could make money from it. When the Psycho Drive exploded, Balrog realized that he had not been paid recently. When M. Bison was killed at the hands of Akuma, ownership of Shadoloo was transferred to the former prize fighter. Unfortunately, he ended up running the entire organization into the ground in record time. After the fall of Shadoloo, Balrog became nothing more than a bum on the streets.

When Street Fighter II was localized in America, Capcom was afraid of a lawsuit from Mike Tyson over a character with his likeness and a similar sounding name (Mike Bison). Additionally, when the designers presented the game to Capcom USA's marketing department, they believed that the name Vega was a weakling's name.[1] They decided to rotate the names of three of the four boss characters in the following manner:
  • The African-American boxer is known as M. Bison in Japan and Balrog elsewhere.
  • The Spanish assassin/bullfighter is known as Balrog in Japan and Vega elsewhere.
  • The evil dictator and head of Shadoloo is known as Vega in Japan and M. Bison elsewhere

Superman™ Returns Ken

Who says that I don't own a 1/6th scale figure when I do own a 12-inch which is also the same scale as the 1/6ths!
Superman™ Ken from the Barbie dolls series by Mattel.

What is with the green background?
I am trying to do the 'green screen' thing?
Nope!
I am trying to portray that the green background suggests Kryton, Superman's worst nightmare.
Cut the crap! Thought green would give the Superman figurine a nice contrast.
I have not done a banner for this figurine because I am lazy..... happy!!!??

Hana 777

Hana 777 is a small series of flowers (花 or 'hana' in Japanese) photographs dedicated to this special day, 7th of July 2007 or 7.7.07. This special day is also the "LIVE EARTH" day where the world come together to celebrate yet remember and care for our mother earth! Save the earth, create less pollution! The number '7' is celebrated because in the western culture and religion, '7' suggests a 'complete' and 'good' number since good things come in '7's, such as 7 colours of the rainbow, 7 days a week etc. Most importantly, it will never come again! Interestingly, in Singapore, there are 777 couples getting married on this auspicious day, despite the showers in the early morning, the day is finally clear and beautiful again, less the hea. So, good things does come in '7'.

The take home message is to "Love the Earth! Make our Earth a greener place to live!"
or put it in an ugly way, "if it dies, we die and our future generation die".

SOTA Street Fighter Round 3: GUILE (ガイル)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

COL William F. Guile
When Guile was a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, he befriended his superior officer, Charlie and asked Charlie to teach him in his unique form of fighting, which Charlie agreed to do. Guile learned the style, but his hot temper caused him to not to be as proficient in the moves as Charlie was.

In Street Fighter continuity, Guile was not introduced to the series until the events of Street Fighter Alpha 3, when he was sent by the United States Air Force to look for his senior teammate and best friend Charlie, who had gone missing during a secret investigation. Guile's search eventually led him to the Interpol investigator Chun-Li, who warned him not to follow Charlie due to the danger involved. Guile demonstrated his fighting ability, and assured Chun-Li that he would not let their friend come to harm. He eventually found the Shadoloo base in Japan along with the missing Charlie. The sinister and powerful M. Bison appeared and attacked the two soldiers, daring them to follow him inside his Shadoloo base. As Chun-Li investigated another area, Charlie and Guile began to set explosives around their mission objective: Bison's source of power, the Psycho Drive. However, Bison surprised them, and a fight ensued. Charlie convinced Guile to escape while he held Bison off, so Guile took Chun-Li and escaped, right before the base exploded, with Charlie and Bison caught in the blast. Standing on the top of a mountain, Guile says he will always believe in Charlie's memory.

Holding Bison responsible for the death of his best friend, he left not only the Air Force but seemingly his whole life to exact revenge on Bison, who had by then somehow survived the explosion. A court case against the Shadaloo dictator failed when Bison bribed all the judges to let him go free. Bison, by this time wanted revenge on Guile, Chun-Li, and many other people who had hindered his syndicate's efforts. To this end, he set up the second World Warrior tournament to trap them.

Although the circumstances on how Guile approached Bison is sketchy, he managed to corner Bison and asked him if he remembered him or his friend Charlie. While Guile threatens the defeated Bison with the intent to kill him, he is stopped.
